Oh, man, I love to barbecue. Every chance I get I am out there with my grill. But what about barbecue accessories? Are they really necessary? Do we need them? Which ones are important and which ones are just for show? In this post here we will just briefly touch on what some of the essentials are that you need for good barbecue.
First, you have to have a heat source. Some sort of way to cook whatever it is that you are cooking. Now it could be tri-tip if you are out in the West. Could be pork shoulder if you are in the Carolinas. And you know that it is brisket if you are down in the Texas area. But you have to be able to fire it up and cook it.
Propane, no, charcoal. No, propane. No, charcoal. And that was not a typo. We hear this argument a lot and it never gets settles.Who cares? What gives? Everybody has their opinion and neither of them is right if you ask me. You know, what works for you is what is right for you. There are added benefits for both…..and disadvantages for both. Next, you will need a spray bottle. Walmart, K-mart, dollar store, it doesn't matter, but when those flames start shooting up it's a good idea to knock them back down. I can remember when I first started to barbecue when I was really young out in Colorado and all my chicken was absolutely black, black, black on the outside and still forzen on the inside. My wife never lets me forget my humble beginnings, no matter how good I get at this.
If you would have ever attended some of the banquets I did at MADONNA INN out in Calif and we served bbq, you would have been impressed at how far I have come over the years. And I only say this to say that there is hope…even for you! If I can learn this, then you know you can. It is not hard. And that is the purpose of this blog. We will explore the great and wonderful world of smoke, and flavors, and tastes of barbecue. There is nothing quite like it.
So, we have fire, we have a spray bottle to knock down the flames. What else do we need?
* grill brush
* tongs (never pierce the meat with a long handled hook)
* spatula for turning burgers, veggie burgers, etc.
* basting brush
* meat thermometer
* good heat resistant mitt
With these basic items , these barbecue accessories, you can really turn out some great tasting barbecue over time. It might take a while for you to really get good at this. A lot of time, patience is required; you have to let the heat do its job. Great tasting barbecue is not in how many times we can flip something over and turn it over again and again. That is not the answer. Hopefully, over time we can share so many of our great tips and hints with you to turn you into the barbecue champion of your neighborhood.
