You Need To Learn How To Be Safe Every Time You Barbecue

I really should not have to say that you need to learn how to be safe every time that you barbecue but every year more and more people are getting hurt in outdoor activities, a huge amount of which includes using a barbecue. A report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tells us that warm-weather activities, in which, like I said, includes using barbecue equipment, had led to more thaqn 3.7 million product related injuries. This study was for 2002.

So it goes without saying that barbecuing can be dangerous. I have mentioned before on these posts how you have to be careful because a lot of times this is a family event and there can be a lot of children running around. Sometimes chasing a dog. And then there is always that perpetually tipsy friend or neighbor (Never a family member) who might have had too much to drink and can not be left along for a second where there is flaming fire, propane gas, or a lot of charcoal briquettes that could all of a sudden become air-borne missiles.

One of the first things which we can learn is just simply to practice awareness. And one of the things that comes to mind when I think about that is 'traffic flow'.  Where is all the foot traffic? Are we going to place our BBQ right in the traffic pattern of people who are going in and out of the house? Or on a staight run to the pool? No, we need to get out of the most heavily trafficiked areas and stay anonoymous. You know what I mean by that. I do not mean go three doors down the the neighbors and BBQ there….although he might appreciate the idea! Just be careful where you place where all the heat is coming from. And do not let little children run around the grill.

And then as far as the placement  of the equipment goes, how about not under any low eaves or under a clothesline full of clothes.
Stuff like that? BBQs have a nasty habit of flaring up sometimes and this could catch part of a house on fire, much less a line full of clothes. Which is why we should  always have a spray bottle nearby. If a flare up continues for too long our food is just going to be charred black. That is not all that appetizing.

Here are some basic rules that need to be heeded:

* Never grill indoors. Only use charcoal grills outdoors where there is plenty of air. Carbon monoixde poisoning is something you
need to avoid like the plague.

* Don't wear loose clothing.

* Grills have a tendency to flare up so keep the aforementioned (that means I already talked about it) water, and if need by, a
fire extinguisher close by.

* Don't use lighter fluid on coal which are  already lit.

Because of the nature of barbecuing and the fire, heat, hot coals, sometimes alcohol, this is why you need to learn how to be safe every time you barbecue.
